About Chantry Singers

The Chantry Singers is a Guildford-based chamber choir of around 30 members, The Chantry Singers was formed in 1983. Established by Tim Venvell (an assistant in the music department of Guildford's Royal Grammar School), the choir was initially comprised of staff, parents and other invited singers. Today they are one of the foremost chamber choirs in the area, giving high quality performances of choral works ranging from Renaissance masterpieces to music by contemporary composers. The choir specialises in presenting highly unusual themed programmes which often combine unfamiliar and slightly challenging music alongside old favourites. Recent highlights have included Handel's Dixit Dominus, Rheinberger's Mass in E flat, Bach's Jesu Meine Freude as well as songs by Gershwin and a selection of music from the movies.

We have also recently performed several successful concerts with the renowned folk duo Ninebarrow.

Each year we support a local Guildford charity through carol singing and bucket collections.

Rehearsals take place at the Church of the Holy Spirit, New Inn Lane, Burpham GU4 7HW from 7.45 to 9.45 every Tuesday evening during school term, preparing for between three and four concerts per year.

Although there is no formal audition, the musical director normally likes to hear prospective members sing a few simple exercises. If you enjoy singing and would like to be a member of a choir where every singer's contribution counts, then please contact us.
